Background of the Study
Sanitation practices in Auyo Local Government Area (LGA), Jigawa State, are heavily influenced by geopolitical factors such as local governance, state policies, and national initiatives aimed at improving public health and sanitation. Despite efforts by the government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to improve sanitation in rural areas, issues such as inadequate infrastructure, limited funding, and cultural attitudes continue to impede progress. Geopolitical factors, including political will, budget allocation, and regional cooperation, play a crucial role in determining the success of sanitation programs in Auyo. This study aims to evaluate how these geopolitical factors shape sanitation practices in the region, focusing on the influence of local governance and state policies.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Auyo LGA, poor sanitation practices have led to environmental pollution, health hazards, and increased vulnerability to disease outbreaks. Geopolitical factors such as insufficient government funding, inadequate local governance structures, and poor intergovernmental coordination have hindered the effective implementation of sanitation programs. This study seeks to assess the impact of these geopolitical factors on sanitation practices in Auyo LGA and evaluate potential solutions.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the role of geopolitical factors in shaping sanitation practices in Auyo LGA.

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of local and state government policies in promoting sanitation improvements in the region.

  • To recommend strategies for improving sanitation practices in Auyo LGA, considering the geopolitical context.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How do geopolitical factors influence sanitation practices in Auyo LGA?

  • What role do local and state governments play in promoting sanitation initiatives in Auyo LGA?

  • What strategies can be adopted to improve sanitation in Auyo, considering the influence of geopolitical factors?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Geopolitical factors, including political leadership and governance issues, significantly influence sanitation practices in Auyo LGA.

  • Local and state government policies are key to improving sanitation practices, but political challenges limit their effectiveness.

  • Strengthening local governance and increasing intergovernmental cooperation can improve sanitation practices in Auyo LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into how geopolitical factors shape sanitation practices in Auyo LGA. The findings will assist policymakers, local government authorities, and NGOs in developing strategies to improve sanitation and public health outcomes in the region (Kolo & Ibrahim, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on sanitation practices in Auyo LGA, Jigawa State. Limitations include the difficulty in accessing accurate data on sanitation infrastructure and political sensitivities related to local governance issues.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Sanitation Practices: The actions and measures taken to maintain cleanliness, manage waste, and prevent contamination in the environment.
